Guide for Hell

Homer is the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, and is revered as the greatest ancient Greek epic poet. These epics lie at the beginning of the Western canon of literature, and have had an enormous influence on the history of literature.

As long as I believed, Homer is the greatest poet until now because he published the history book about epic in western culture. He knows the philosophical and historical ideas about ancient philosophers and policy makers. He can demonstrate the life in Hell pretty good by using his substantial understanding about the world and people in the society, either at his time, or before his time.

Personally, I like history writter to lead me through the hell because they do not have crazy ideas like some philosophers do. They will say whatever they need to say. They will tell whatever that is right to tell. This makes Homer, the first history writter of Greek, the first choice of my guide to the hell. He can tell me the knowledge about the underworld and depraved society at that era better than some of the philosophers do.

Beowulf and City

Beowulf and the City
                           Section 1: Beo,Beowulf!!
"Beowulf! We need your help!"
"I am coming, don't worry!"
Beowulf, the son of the famous doctor Ecglaf, lived in China, inherited his father's occupation on medicine and learned how to cue most of the diseases in the world. He confidently stated that :" No disease will not be cured by my intelligence and knowledge." None of the people in the world distrust his dominance on medical technology because he really solved all the diseases that no one will ever solve in the history of medicine.
                            Section 2: "Shadow" comes
It was one day in 2005. The world is settled. Everyone spends the day with totally normal attitude. No one will believe that day changed the whole world. It brought so many people's deaths, and made one person well-known in the world.
Accompany with wind, groups of powders fell down on New York City. No one noticed the difference of anything although they felt the weird powders on the face. Suddenly, one person felt down. Then, one by one, people fell down and their heart stopped functioning.
The president of United States quickly organized all the doctors from the country and tried to solve this natural disaster. However, it's too late. No one will believe that, within one day, the whole New York was wept out from the natural catastrophe. Scientists and doctors worked on solving the problem, but no effective action can be taking in. They can just named the disease "shadow", which no one can catch where will it travel and what is the amount of people it will kill. When the whole country of United States situated in the depression of despair, "Shadow" landed in the other land of the world -- Europe. England and France quickly fell from the attack of "shadow". The world needs a person who can solve the problem, but no one knew who can stop "shadow's" attacking.
Section 3: Beowulf and Shadow.
"I can."
From the far China, Beowulf ended his 7-day travelling and went back to his homeland, America. Although he heard about the flu around the world, he still got surprised when he came back to America. Everybody stared at the sky and waited till the last minute of life.
Beowulf quickly used his special poison-preventing mask and traveled around USA to search for evidences that can solve this crisis. However, Beowulf can not find any clues to deal with this disease at all.
"Why this disease can spread so fast without warning?" Beowulf thinks.
Taking the risk, he finally decided to go to New York to look for the evidences for the causes of "shadow."
When he arrived at New York, everthing is dead silence. People believe this is the death area. With the special mask on, Beowulf believed he can survive from this. He walked around and tried find tiny traces for the reason, but those powders he found do not act any abnormal to him at all. These are just simply powders from industry. It cannot cause death effect on people. Soon, he got tired. He took off his mask. He felt the relief of breath the fresh air.
"Wait, Why I did not feel any discomfort even though I am exposed to this polluted area."
When he picked up the powders on the floor again, he noticed although these powders are so small and cannot cause devastating consequence, they are actually extremely toxic to the people who exposed to pollutants every single day.
"Then, why people died so quickly. These powders cannot kill people that fast." Beowulf thought about it for a long time.
"Oh! I get it. It is all because of ourselves. When the first group of people died without any symptoms before, people thought the powders are the main cause of their deaths. They get so anxious of the toxins and eventually the poisonous substances built up in their body irreversibly. Even though those powders did not fall on certain areas, people scared to death because their self-implication.
Beowulf finally found out the origin of this disease. Although "shadow" is produced by the mixture of poisonous gas in the pollution in industries through United States, the real cause of is actually ourselves. He cured everybody just by telling them just face "shadow" without any anxiety, and then they will survive. He also controlled the spread of "shadow" and organized groups of scientists. He impressively made the solution to "shadow" and well-known around the world.
"Come on, disease, I can conquer you all.!" Beowulf kept believing that he can deal with every disease around the world.

Island Story

Long long ago, there was a legend about a magic island. It was believed to have some weird, very weird stuff. No one can explain what is the mystery on that island because no one has been there, or..... THEY ALL GOT KILLED!

It's a story about Fin Island, the island of mystery.

"Tim! Tim! Wake up!" In the unconsiciousness, I felt somebody is calling on me.

"Huh." I signed. "What just happened? I am completely lost of my memory."

"Tim, you finally wake up! Our plane just crashed, now only you and me survived from that!"

"Oh! Why I cannot remember that! Ah! My head huerts!"

"That's probably because you just kicked by me."

"Dare you!!!"

This man is my best friend, Wade, who was travelling with me, to....to.... I really cannot remember that. Anyways, we survived.

I stand up, look around. The ground is covered by sand. Ocean is incredibly blue. All kinds of trees line up next to us, but no life at all.

"Wade, how long have I been sleeping?"

"Two days, I try to wake you up. It's never working until you finally wake up by yourself."

"Did you eat, or drinking these days."

"Yep, I ate and drank just a little. I found a suitcase filled with food and drinks that did not destroy from plane crash."

"Oh. It seems like we will be here for a long time."

(Sign) " I really hope we can survive from this."

Wind blows on our face. The lifeless island makes us feel scared and hopeless, although it seems like we can gather food and drink by ourselves.

"Well, let's go" Wade said.

I just followed him and walked into the forest, with scare and a bit excitement.

Island is just weird. These are trees from all over the world, although the temeperature stays same all year around. The water contains different colors. The first we walked by, green. Second time, blue. Third time, brilliant red! " Why?" I'm confused. Suddenly, I saw an ipod hanging on the tree. I open it. There is only me album. Under the tree, a book called "Origins of species" laying on the ground. What is this? Did somebody already come here?

I look around. A skeleton shows up on the ground. We are so scared and jumped away immediately. I suppose this is the skeleton of Charles Darwin. How can he come here? I kept thinking, but cannot get the answer.

To be continued.~

College Essay

                                          Magic bottle
Fascinating, is all I have in my mind when I think about my kindergarten in China. However, the best memory kindergarten gave me was: It enlightened me greatly. I can still remember the happiness I had when my lovely teacher led me to explore plenty of adventures. By doing the simplest scientific experiment, we discovered the world in this small kindergarten. The most memorable thing I can think of was a experiment with magic bottle.

The day before the experiment, my kindergarten teacher Ms. Zhang asked us to empty some plastic bottles and bring them to school. We were really curious about what are those bottles used for. On the second day, right at the time we stepped in the classroom, she quickly collected all the colorful bottles, and filled them with water. After the bottles were completely filled, she handed them back to us with a shiny smile on her face. She mysteriously told us that these bottles are actually called magic bottles; when a hole was poked on the surface, the magic will occur. We stared at each other with a great confusion, but we are all eager to see magic. After teacher told us to go to sand ground and accomplish the magic, we rushed out with needles just want to be the first one to see. When I reach sand ground, I quickly used the needle to poke a hole on it. Wow! Immediately, I surprisingly saw the water ran from the bottles and absorbed by the sand! She saw the happiness on our face, and asked us to put pressure on those bottles. We got more excited because the flowing rate of water was increased.

It was a fun day. We quickly collect our stuffs and threw those bottles away. I realized the holes in the bottles were possibly the solution for this phenomenon, but I still could not figure out why. I worked hard on solving this by doing the similar experiment repeatedly. Using different types of bottles, distinct types of liquid, and various pressure on the testing bottles, I discovered different outcomes, but I still cannot draw to a conclusion to explain the theory behind it. .

Keeping the bottle puzzle in mind, I finally found out the answer in high school physics book. The bottle experiment is actually linked to the fluid mechanics. The deepness and density of liquid are actually the cause of the exclusion of water. The changes in those two variables will determine the rate of exclusion of liquid. The greater the density and deepness get, the greater speed of water flow and the pressure in liquid. Thus, when we poke a hole on the bottle, the pressure of bottles will push the liquid out, and pressing the bottle will lead more water to put out from water bottle.

Kindergarten life was just fabulous. Science became my determined area that I want to enter. My childhood experience really makes me realize it has a huge impact on my future. In the Cornell Engineering College, the various engineering department can help me further develop my interest on science. There are so many scientific mystery around us. Human race can not completely explain the science in the universe. Those scientific puzzles really fostered me to learn science, and I am really eager to learn more methods and knowledge.
